Improving quantum light sources to strengthen Canada’s leadership in quantum technology

Kimberley Hall is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University and the George Munro Chair of Physics.

Quantum technologies are set to revolutionize many areas of daily life, driving innovation and economic growth. The unique quantum properties of single particles of light, known as photons, are key to enabling the development of quantum networks and computers. Hall and Gamouras’ project aims to develop quantum photonic circuits which exploit optimized quantum dot single-photon sources.

Their project merges the expertise of Gamouras and other world-renowned researchers from the NRC in the fabrication, optimization and characterization of semiconductor nanostructures for quantum photonics, and the expertise of Hall and the Dalhousie Ultrafast Quantum Control Group in the development of optimal quantum control strategies for the optical triggering of single photons on-demand. By improving quantum light sources—an essential component for quantum computing, communication, and networking—this research will strengthen Canada’s leadership in quantum technology and create lasting benefits across the country’s innovation ecosystem.
