Leur masse, qui est 1,4 fois celle du soleil, tient dans une sph\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e0 peine 20\u00a0km de diam\u00e8tre. Ces \u00e9toiles sont principalement faites de neutrons, l\u2019un des deux \u00e9l\u00e9ments du noyau atomique. De fait, on pourrait les consid\u00e9rer comme des noyaux atomiques g\u00e9ants \u00e0 la densit\u00e9 consid\u00e9rablement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Nous ne savons pas encore de quelle fa\u00e7on la mati\u00e8re se comporte \u00e0 de telles densit\u00e9s, et l\u2019un des grands objectifs de mes recherches est de le d\u00e9couvrir. Pour ce faire, je mesure les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s des \u00e9toiles \u00e0 neutrons.<\/p>\n<p>Marten van Kerkwijk esp\u00e8re utiliser la bourse de recherche Killam pour explorer une nouvelle technique de mesure, la \u00ab\u00a0scintillom\u00e9trie\u00a0\u00bb.
