Simon Caron-Huot is a Professor of Physics at McGill University and the Canada Research Chair in High-Energy Physics. His research focuses on developing new analytic techniques in quantum field theory.

Particle physics seeks to describe the physical world at its deepest microscopic level. Its language, quantum field theory, is shared by many branches of modern physics. Caron Huot’s proposal focuses on two regimes: weak and strong coupling, with the central goal to fill the gap between weak and strong coupling to enable controlled calculations at finite values of interaction strengths.

His proposal builds on a powerful realization: there is often a unique quantum field theory compatible with given symmetries and universal principles of relativity and quantum mechanics. Developments from recent years show that this can be leveraged to efficiently extract precise predictions. The resulting so-called bootstrap methods have been successfully applied to conformal (scale-less) theories, and Caron-Huot proposes a way to apply them to scattering amplitudes in more general models, including the theory of the strong force.

Caron-Huot’s research will have a direct impact on the field of precision calculations of Standard Model processes. The notion that quantitative predictions can be extracted directly from general principles is far-reaching. The work aims to have a profound and long-lasting influence on the way microscopic interactions are understood, used and taught by practitioners in several subfields.
