Melanie Lui

Killam Doctoral Scholarship Recipient

University of Alberta

The goal of Melanie’s research is to first use synthetic inorganic chemistry to isolate new reactive non-metal compounds that are stable enough to be stored, which is necessary for industrial applications. Secondly, she hopes to apply these novel species as metal-free catalysts towards activating small molecules or forming polymers.

When not studying/working, you can find Melanie enjoy playing board games, eating different ethnic foods, and participating in athletic activities (e.g. running, team sports, hiking).

A regular volunteer, one of her most rewarding experiences came from teaching an adult with disabilities how to use and distinguish Canadian currency; this individual can now grocery shop independently.
