Dr. Richard Carpiano from the Department of Sociology is a multiple UBC Killam prize winner, having received UBC's Killam Research Prize in 2014 and UBC's Killam Faculty Research Fellowship in 2015. This fellowship will allow him to pursue full time resarch during a study leave.
Dr. Carpiano is interested in determining how and why socio-economic factors cause changes in people's health. Generally he has seen that health and illness distributions and even life expectency vary across social groups. People in advantaged positions generally live more healthy and longer lives and Dr. Carpiano is working to figure out why in order to be able to even out the distribution of life expectancy across all societial groups.
