René Doyon is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Université de Montréal, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Experimental Astrophysics and Exoplanetary Science, and is Director of the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets and the Mont-Mégantic Observatory.
A pioneer in infrared, Doyon has developed cutting-edge instruments for detecting and characterizing planets located outside our solar system. He is the principal investigator and coordinator of the overall Canadian contribution to the James Webb Space Telescope, launched by NASA in 2021.
Doyon dedicates the entirety of his knowledge and skills to the creation of ultra-specialized instruments used in the study of exoplanets, stars and brown dwarfs, leading to transformative discoveries. The novel concept he proposed involves dimming the bright glare caused by stellar light to detect previously invisible planets. The techniques developed by his team captured the very first images of a planetary system orbiting a star other than the Sun, which was a revolution in the field and allowed his techniques to be used by astronomers around the world.
These discoveries advance the ultimate goal of exoplanet research, to discover signs of life beyond the solar system. As a result of his important work, it is now possible to use the spectroscopy of a planet’s signal to determine the chemical composition of its atmosphere, looking for water, oxygen and methane, for example.
Doyon’s key contributions seek to advance our knowledge of exoplanets, signaling a new era in our exploration and understanding of the universe.
