Bridging spin qubits and superconducting amplifiers to tackle major obstacles in scalable quantum devices

Shabir Barzanjeh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary.

It is theoretically established that quantum computers will lead to breakthroughs in medicine, materials design, artificial intelligence, and secure communication. Despite enormous worldwide efforts, however, today’s quantum devices face two major obstacles: quantum bits are extremely fragile, reading out their information accurately remains slow and unreliable; and there are challenges in connecting quantum processors over distance, which is essential for large-scale quantum computing.

By combining unique and complementary domains of expertise, Studenikin and Barzanjeh aim to realize a new paradigm for hybrid quantum technologies, integrating the quantum-limited amplifiers with semiconductor “spin qubits,” a leading platform for scalable quantum computing that is compatible with existing chip manufacturing technologies. The research will develop and demonstrate faster and more reliable qubit readout and will pursue the first Canadian demonstration of entanglement between remote semiconductor qubits using microwave quantum signals.

By enabling scalable quantum processors and networked quantum systems, this work supports Canada’s strategic position in next-generation computing, secure communications, and advanced sensing technologies.
